Flat Shea learns about Captain Cook....

Do you know who Captain Cook was?   Flat Shea found a statue of Him in Gisborne.   Here are some cool facts about him!
James Cook’s First Voyage of Discovery to New Zealand took place between 1769- 1770.  During this time Cook and his crew sailed around New Zealand mapping the coastline, describing the soils, plants and animals and developing relationships with the local Maori people'.  When Captain Cook landed in Turanganui A Kiwa or Gisborne the Maori people didnt know who he was so they did a Wero which is a traditional Maori challenge.  Captain Cook and his Crew didn't know what they were doing and shot about 6 of the Maori warriors.
Captain Cook wanted supplies like water, blankets and food but because of the shootings the Maori people wouldn't give him and his crew anything. Captain Cook named the region Poverty Bay.  He and his crew then sailed up to Tauranga Moana where the Maori people gave him the supplies he wanted.  He named that region the Bay of Plenty.
